Bag No. 7 – Snug & Soft Kindle Sleeve

✂️ The Inspiration

I’ve been thinking about how I carry my Kindle everywhere, tucked into bags, on trips, and often it jostles against other things or the edges get scuffed. I wanted something minimal that protects but still looks nice; sleek, soft lining so it slides in gently, and a “snug fit” so it doesn’t flop around.

It’s not exactly a bag in the traditional sense, but I decided to include it in this challenge because, to me, it functions like a bag or at least a pouch for my Kindle. Something purposeful and protective, with enough design intention to stand on its own. So I set out to make a Kindle sleeve with a vegan leather exterior (easy to clean, good structure) and a cotton lining (for softness), and to get the size just right. It took four tries to land on the perfect fit. Here’s how each version went.

🧵 Materials & Features

  • Exterior: Vegan leather in soft tiara and floral print.
  • Lining: 100% cotton; soft, light, breathable.
  • Simple and no fuss Kindle sleeve

🔍 The Four Attempts at “Perfect Size”

Here are the four versions, what worked, what didn’t, and how I refined each time.

VersionDimensions (HxW)What Was GoodWhat Was Problematic
1st Try – Snug but no lining8″ x 5 3/8″The outer vegan leather fit the Kindle nice and snug — felt secure, didn’t move around at all.Without any lining, it just didn’t feel finished or like it offered much protection. Plus, it was a bit too tall for my taste.
2nd Try – Too small7.5″ x 5 1/4″Adding the lining really gave it a more professional look. I like how clean and finished it feels now.Once I added the lining, it was impossible to slide the Kindle in — just way too tight, especially at the corners.
3rd Try – Too big8 1/4″ x 6 1/4″Slides in really easily, no catching on the edges. There’s just way too much room; the Kindle slides around, bangs into the sides, and the whole thing just feels loose. Doesn’t really protect it, and it even starts slipping out of the sleeve.
4th Try – Perfect fit7 3/4″ x 5 3/4It’s snug, but with the lining, the edges feel safe; overall feels secure and well-protected. The lining adds a bit of plushness, and the vegan leather helps it keep its shape.None

No photo for attempt #1. It was really bad. 😂

🔨 Behind the Scenes / Process Notes

  • Seam allowance matters: forgetting to allow enough for the lining + seam made Version 2 fail even though the outer “pattern” looked okay.
  • Layering leather over lining adds thickness; suddenly what looked roomy became tight. I adjusted accordingly in Version 4.
  • Corners and curves are tricky: folding vegan leather cleanly without bulky bunching required trimming, not just folding.

Honestly, what I realized doing this is I still don’t really know the exact math behind cutting patterns based on the item size. It’s mostly just trial and error for me right now. 😂 One day I’ll get it!

🌟 The Final Specs & What I Love About It

Here’s what the perfect version ended up being:

  • Final dimensions: (7.75 × 5.75) – for Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition (12th generation) model
  • Exterior: vegan leather; floral and tiara print
  • Lining: cotton; simple polka dot print

What I love:

  • It slides into larger bags without adding bulk.
  • The Kindle stays protected even if bumped.
  • The feel: soft lining, structured exterior, just the right tension; not floppy, not rigid.
  • The look: vegan leather gives a clean, modern vibe; lining adds a hidden detail when you open it.

Up Next : Bag No. 8. I can’t believe the year is almost over.
